So, I’m not completely playing by the rules when it comes to Tuesday’s Tribute.
It’s a tribute, but to an inanimate object.
I have yet to get the Christmas tree down (here is where my Mother would point out that today, being Epiphany, is actually the true day to dispose of it – thanks Mum). Therefore, this is what I have to offer. I will give you a person come next week.
This is actually a rerun of a post I created at the beginning of this bloggy journey. I’ve always considered it one of my best, but much like the tree in the forest, no one was around to hear it (read it?).
You know.
Yesterday’s droping off of Oldest was somewhat bittersweet after having so much fun with him over the last two weeks. But as my Mother would also make note, he went back to public kindergarten, not boarding school.
This from a woman who locked herself in a closet for a month after I left home for college.
Enough of all that, I present to you…
Ode to a Sharpie
I find you, tucked in the back of the junk drawer.
You’ve been waiting for this moment all Summer long.
I’ve been dreading it.
But now it’s your turn to shine.
Somehow my hands inscribe Oldest’s name on his backpack, his lunch box, his nap mat, his jacket.
Your indelible ink will ensure that all my sweet boy’s precious items will be returned to their rightful owner…
I wonder if my first born would mind if I wrote “Mama” on his forehead?
Where would you be without the trusty Sharpie?
Somewhere, out there, without a lot of your stuff.
